Unfortunate, Mark, but no casualties I trust. On a lighter note, have ‘yis
tried phoning Ger O’Neill in Fenniscourt…?? He “specialises” in getting
boats off rocks. I can personally recommend him…!!!M(W&W)F

Apparently she has 6 compartments, all are holed, the hull is built from
Kevlar according to the BBC NI news this evening, and the photos at
least were very bad, with seemingly considerable damage the length of
the keel and on the bow. -

It is indeed very sad.
When I was inlolved with some Irish Sea narrowboating exploits (2004) we met
some Irish boaters in a ex-RNLI Arun class lifeboat at Holyhead Marina. ISTR
that they said it was a damaged total loss, due to being run down by a ship.
They got it for a song minus engines and put an even larger pair of Detroit?
diesels in it. It left Holyhead like a rocket!
Does anyone know more about the boat / collision that totalled it?Neil Arlidge – NB Earnest – Shannon Reg 7410

According to news they do not expect to be able to pull the boat off now. Damage is very severe to hull. That hull is reinforced by Kevlar is irrelevent in this sort of case. Kevlar is great in tension but useless in compression and rubbung against rocks would break it easily. You can break Kevar thread by rubbing it with your finger nail.

Neil this is more likely what you saw…..
Douglas Inner Harbour reverberated to the heavy diesels of the former Arun
Class Lifeboat IRISH MIST as she arrived on Saturday, April 29, 2006. This
vessel is probably better known as the former Rosslare Lifeboat RNLB ST.
BRENDAN. She was sold out of service by the RNLI following damaged sustained
when she was struck by Stena Line’s KONINGIN BEATRIX in a berthing incident
in during the summer of 2001. Following repairs she entered service as a
corporate hospitality and diving charter vessel with West Coast Charters of
Holyhead and Oban. She is is now registered in Holyhead.Mark Maguire

Hi Mark,
That would fit the bill!
I have Googled on the name and come up with this, that fits, re the Detroit
diesels:

Whe I saw it, it was still in RNLI colours, I have dug out a piccy of it at
Holyhead Marina:

Update Sunday 1600 hours
A New Severn Class Lifeboat the RNLB Margaret Joan and Fred Nye has arrived at Portrush to cover for the Katie Hannan.Katie Hannan has sustained serious and extensive damage to the underside of the hull, but despite this and the heavy pounding she has taken large parts of the structure are intact and the vessel is not thought to be in danger of breaking up.
All fluids and oils have been removed safely without spillage or environmental damage. Also all the lifeboats portable equipment was carefully removed and stored ashore. It is hoped that the Katie Hannan can be removed intact but this will be dependant on the weather.
regards
Dave

The wind direction has verred around for next few days, but don’t know if this will help or make it worse. How will they float her off, internal and external bags and pumps galore?
